Powerless and Uncaring: A loving God & so much suffering?
In this third talk, Adrian Holloway responds to the question how can a loving God allow so much suffering?
We all know there's lots of suffering in the world. If there is a God why doesn't he do anything about it? Doesn't he care? Or is he actually pretty weak and powerless?
Adrian considers four perspectives on suffering that may help us as we tackle this difficult subject. He considers: free will and the related issues of moral evil and natural disasters; the way suffering can sometimes lead to good; the fact that God is not immune to suffering, particularly as shown by the life of Jesus and his death on the Cross; and the need to consider the bigger picture raised by the existence of eternal life and heaven.
The talk lasts for about 25 minutes, followed by about 25 minutes of questions and answers.
